When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cell phones?

Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. "Don't throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we'll recycle it," he says. " If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground — and it becomes a big problem."

Cell phones contain some toxic materials (有毒物质), like lead, mercury and cadmium. If your phone goes to a landfill, these toxic materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That's the water we want to drink or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year.

"At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again," explains Mike. "We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel, and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts."

Mike says recycling your old phone is easy. "You can usually take it into a cell phone shop and they'll send it to us." So, before you throw your old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone recycling company near you and give them a call.

On 20 February, Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, announced a plan to offer free school meals to all primary school pupils in London in the next academic year. Khan's plan will help around 270,000 pupils and will cost £130 million.

In recent years, the cost of basic items like food and energy has gone up, putting pressure on some families. Research shows that when children have a healthy1 they learn more in class. Khan had free school meals when he was younger, and he told The Week Junior, "It is important for everyone to eat the2 food together. Meals are a time to sit and talk to your friends. No one should be made to feel different or have to sit at another table because they get free meals."

The plan won't start until September because kitchens require time to3 more staff and get ready to make more lunches. Khan said, "If overnight, every school in London had to do free school meals, there would be chaos (混乱) in the kitchens."

The4 for who gets free school meals are different all over the UK. In the rest of England, all pupils from Reception to Year 2 are given free meals. Older children in England and Scotland from eligible families (those who can prove they require them)5  get free meals. In Northern Ireland, free meals are only available to children from eligible families. In Wales, from 2024 all primary school children will get them.

Victoria Benson from Gingerbread, a charity that supports single parents, said the plan "will be a huge relief (减轻) to many parents that their child will now be fed at school." However, not everyone6 the plan. Some people think all secondary school pupils should be given free meals too. Others say free meals should only be given to those who really require them.

Is the cinema better than home?

For more than 100 years, going to the cinema with friends and family to watch brand-new films has been a tradition that lots of people have loved. Not only is it a great experience to sit in comfortable seats and eat a bucket of popcorn, but it's a cto watch the latest films on the big screen. However, with the growth of streaming services (流媒体服务) in recent years, and the closing of cinemas during the Covid-19 pandemic, some people have realized it's easier and more convenient to watch films in their own home. Lots of exciting films have been rin the last year, but some people would rather watch them at home than at the cinema. What do you think? Are cinemas the best place to watch films?

Yes – it's an aexperience

Going to the cinema is a really fun activity to enjoy with friends and family. It's a good time to leave the house, enjoy a film with other people, and even eat some delicious popcorn. Nothing beats the experience of going to the cinema. It's a wonderful combination ( 结合) of extremely surprising visuals on a large screen, with great surround s. It's very easy to lose yourself in a film while at the cinema. Lots of films are specially made for the big screen and films are not as good when viewed on a TV or laptop. It's much easier to be distracted (分心) by other things at home, like someone wanting to sthe film to get a drink. Seeing a film at the cinema avoids distractions; it requires your full attention and it feels special.

No  they're too expensive

It can cost a lot of money to go to the cinema, especially when the whole family is going together. People don't jhave to pay for tickets but snacks and drinks too. Most popular films usually stay in the cinemas for around four weeks, and sometimes it doesn't take long before they're available on streaming services. There's no nto see films at the cinema if they'll be available to watch at home in a month or two. Streaming films is much easier too, because people have more contral over when they watch the film and can pause (暂停) it whenever they like.

Basket full of dreams

A set of photos of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket has been widely spread on the Internet. The boy,Wang Fa,14, is a member of the Va ethnic group (佤族) in Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou, an audience member from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken.

"We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. I carried my rackets in this basket to honour ( 表达敬意) my hometown, " Wang said after the match.

Before tennis, Wang was only an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. "I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home," he said, adding that tennis has helped him make more friends and get a better education.

Over the past six years, Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, has trained hard to improve his skills and physical strength. Every day, they must swing a racket more than 7,000 times and run 9 kilometers.

"If I weren't chosen as a tennis player, I would still be helping out my family with farmwork back home," Wang said. Wang's parents didn't want him to learn tennis at first because they couldn't afford it. But the tennis club offered to teach him for free. Wang's hometown, the mountainous Cangyuan Va autonomous county (沧源佤族自治县), was lifted out of

poverty (贫穷) in 2019, reported China Daily.

For Wang, winning the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour title was the beginning of a hopeful future. "I will aim for the top spots on the professional stage," he said.
