Water purification system(水净化系统)

In the 1960s, NASA created a way to purify astronauts' drinking water by adding silver ions(离子) into the spacecraft's water supply system. This technology is now widely used to help keep the water in swimming pools clean.

Carmera phones

In the 1990s, a team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) worked to create cameras

small enough to fit on spacecrafts. Now lots of cameras use this technology, which makes camera phones possible.

Memory foarm(记忆海绵)

It was developed by NASA in the'1970s to help make pilots' seats more comfortable.

Today memory foam is used to make more comfortable beds, chairs, sofas and even shoes.

Freeze-dried food(冻干食品)

NASA did a lot of research on space food. One important thing was that they found a

way of keeping food—freeze-drying. It keeps 98% of the nutrients(营养物) of the food, but the food weighs about 80% less. Now freeze-dried food is often used by campers and is included in emergency kits(应急包).

These new gloves are expensive, but they take the term"handsfree"to a new level. People can talk to them as they make a call. The gloves are known as"Talk to the Hand" and cost 1,000pounds a pair.

They come with a speaker unit(扬声器装置) put into the thumb(拇指) and a microphone built into the little finger that can be connected to any mobile handset(电话听筒) using Bluetooth.Phone users will be able to keep their hands warm while they chat without taking their phones out of their pockets or handbags.

Artist Sean Miles, from Winsor, designed(设计) the great gloves that double as a phone in part of his project. He connected gloves with parts from mobile handsets recycled through O2. Mr Miles designed two pairs of the new gloves: one in pink and the other in brown and yellow. They will appear in an exhibition this July and visitors will be able to win the gloves. If need is great, they will then be produced at a larger amount.

O2 Recycle, which supported the project, says that there are already 70 million unused mobile handsets in the UK. Bill Eyers, head of O2 Recycle, asks people to recycle their phones responsibly.

Designer Sean Miles, the 41-year-old man behind the designs, said, "I hope that my project will get people to think again about the waste created by not recycling gadgets(小器具). If a few more people recycle their gadgets rather than throw them away as rubbish, I think this project will have fulfilled    its goal."

Miles is now working on combining phones with handbags. So people don't spend time rummaging(翻寻) around in their bags to find a phone when it rings.

On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around to find a little old lady with a warm smile. She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm 87 years old."

"Why are you in university at such a YOUNG age?"I asked. She replied,"I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children, and then retire and travel."

I knew she was joking. I was curious(好奇的) what might have encouraged her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

"I always dreamed of having a college education. Now I'm getting one!" she told me. We became friends. Every day we would talk nonstop after class. I always enjoyed listening to this "time machine"as she shared her wisdom(智慧) and experience with me. And Rose easily made friends wherever she went.

At the end of the term we invited Rose to make a little speech. She cleared her throat and began,"We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. I've learned a few secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dream, you die."

"There is a huge difference between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow old. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way the elderly don't have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do."

From red apples and yellow lemons to blue berries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?

According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments(色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid(类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin(花青素). These pigments appear in different amounts, depending on the fruit's environment. This causes the fruit to turn a certain color.

To find out how environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.

They found that red fruits tend to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruits mostly grow in warm places. These fruits tend to grow a lot in just one specific area. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator(赤道), the darker its color will be.

Animals have also had an impact on the evolution(进化) of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places.Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.

However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals' visual abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there tend to be more red fruits in areas where birds live. The lemurs(狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruits can be found in their habitats(栖息地), as they can easily see this color.

Parents are the most important people in our life. They influence our lives in so many ways.They teach us almost everything about living, give us strength of character and make us who we are. It is because of them that we become able to do our duties. The things that we are able to do are actually their gifts to us. Right from taking care of us when we are young to guiding us whenever we need their advice, they are always there by our side.

All we can do for them is to give them love and happiness and try to make them feel proud of us. First of all, you need to follow all the good things they taught you when you were very young.It could be about eating healthily or exercising in a regular way, or it could be about helping anyone who needs help.

Not making complaints is also a good way. So don't complain about what you don't have.Learn to appreciate(感激) and love what your parents give you; you may not know the struggles they go through in order to give you that.

Thirdly, you also need to start making your own decisions wisely and confidently. In other words, take control of your life by deciding what will be good or bad for you. Let them see that you are able to do all kinds of things without asking others for help.

More importantly, you should try to be a good person. Be polite and respectful to your family and friends. When they give you advice or a suggestion, you'd better take their ideas into consideration. Try to work as hard as you can and be modest with what you have achieved.Anyway, seeing you grow into a good person will surely make your parents proud.
