Are you going to give gifts to your Chinese friends? If you are, please remember these things you shouldn't do. In China, there are some don't about giving presents. Here are some of them. Keep them in mind, or you may make your Chinese friends unhappy or angry.

Avoid giving a clock as a gift. In Chinese saying "sending a clock" is the same as saying "going to a funeral (葬礼)". Therefore, sending a clock to someone as a gift in China is usually regarded as cursing someone. It is very impolite to give a clock as a gift to anyone.

Never give white or yellow flowers, particularly chrysanthemums (菊花). These are funeral flowers in China. Do not offer them as gifts to anyone, especially to elderly people and patients.

Don't send pears or umbrellas to your Chinese friends. Never send pears to newly married couples because the Chinese pronunciation of "pear" is exactly the same as "divorce". In the same way, saying "umbrella" in Chinese means "separation". Sending these gifts to Chinese couples is strongly regarded as a curse of being apart at them.

Don't wrap (包裹) your gifts in wrong colors. You should choose the right colors to wrap your gift. When you wrap your gift, you can use red wrapping paper. Never wrap your gift in any dark colors. If you choose red wrapping paper, you can't go wrong.
